The Fantasia Film Festival and Cinemaniax presents our 25 guests with double passes for a special screening of FULL STRIKE, on Friday July 24TH, 2015 at the Concordia Hall Theatre (1455 De Maisonneuve Blvd. West) at 6:20 PM.
FULL STRIKE (Canadian Premiere)
Beware the flying birdies of badminton as they strike Hong Kong! Beast Ng (award-winner Josie Ho) was a fearless champion until her notorious temper disqualified her. Now she’s exiled to her brother’s restaurant, doing nothing but meaningless tasks. One stormy night, in an abandoned sports centre, she crosses paths with three ex-cons who are using the sport to redeem their criminal pasts. Enter Suck Nipple Cheung (Ronald Cheng), a nefarious character who intends to take the group to the badminton cleaners. But a code of conduct has compelled them to sort out their differences through a big tournament. Will these washed-up losers be able to reawaken a famous master, to whip them back into shape for the grand finale? Or will Mr. Nipple use other sly tactics to beat them?
Derek Kwok, with co-director Henri Wong, has nailed the birdie for crazy, action-packed fun, Hong Kong-style! No need to be a sports fan. Imagine a badminton film structured like a martial arts flick or cowboy Western, and deliciously dressed up with outrageous laughs that recall the king of HK comedy, Stephen Chow (SHAOLIN SOCCER), and Kwok’s earlier Fantasia classic GALLANTS. An actual Olympic player, Ling Wan-Ting (Athens 2004), was brought in to train the actors for authenticity, while veteran action choreographers kept their movements graceful and kinetic. Composer Yusuke Hatano’s groovy soundtrack enhances the film with an extra layer of coolness. Scene-stealing supporting actors include Andrew Lam, Ronald Cheng and a queen of Shaw Brothers cinema, Susan Shaw (BUDDHA’S PALM). The birdies of fury will strike if you miss it!
