Public Enemies tells the story of legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and gang members “Baby Face” Nelson and Alvin Karpis, who were adorned by the public but despised by J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) and his novice F.B.I. contingent. Playing cat-and-mouse and leading top agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) on wild chases and numerous shootouts , Dillinger finally meets his fate upon exiting a movie theater in Chicago. Not Depp’s best work, but a great depiction of American Gangster history. (R)
